not alone, not even close

some selected images from my recent trip to austin texas for sxsw. for the first time i was not even close to being alone when out shooting. all these were taken from about 1-4 a.m. i noticed that anytime i saw green lighting it was from an atm. i found myself drawn to the guy under the atm, holy shit did he look depressed. everyone else was moving, except him.

the clock on the wall reads a quarter past midnight

lately i've been more interested about the people that are up when i'm shooting, the places they occupy, and what this can possibly say if anything about who is inside. light is selective at night for obvious reasons. but we controll it. we own the night. i'm wondering what it means when our existence is known only from a lightsource. subcultures both well known and not came from night. what does a house say about a person?

Selected works from my first semester in photography. So far i have been concentrating allot on night photography and natural light. I have worked a little with compositing on my first project, each photo containing at least three images of myself. The last project i started working on a series of building portraits. I concentrated mainly on corner stores or buildings isolated by location. I wanted to present these places that are normally very busy during the day at there most isolated and intimate moment.

type finals and thoughts

On my first album cover i focused mainly on building the letters through informative pictures, letting the images fill certain areas and then spill out over others. For the second album i built a picture that i felt informed the content of the album. what made this different is that i then began letting the letters be placed in a way that they fit into the environment. also on this album i have never seen the original cover. the concept behind the album was that the artist bon iver spent three months isolated in a cabin, going there to get away from all his problems, and while there ended up recording an album about his wants, needs, longing, and pain.

Type Process

so far i started looking at allot of type on vinyl record covers. i've always enjoyed album work that has a strong image and type combination. next i started focusing allot on the artwork on concept albums, especially the work of storm thorgerson. the more i looked the more i started to look for the relation of the artwork on the cover to the content of the album. the questions i then became personally curious about where how i could use image based type to inform the content of a concept album, how images can push and influence the shape of a letter form while also pushing legibility, and how the content can influence the letter forms.

while looking at thorgersons work i was browsing through all the pink floyd albums he has designed and got to the one he did for the animals cover. i did alot of research on the album and what it was all about. the album has alot to do with roger waters problems with socialism. he also classifies people into three categories of animals, either pigs, dogs, or sheep. i then started to mess with leterforms in an attempt to re-design the album.

for part 1 of exhibiting signification my object will be a sword.  for safety purposes for my classmates and especially myself i will bring in a plastic sword although i def have some real ones.  its okay be jellous.  my target audience will be medieval/fantasy/renessaince/world of warcraft people.  my audience would of been introduced to this object through movies, books, games, and festivals.  this is an object that is more related to a hobby but at the same time there are plenty of people who still make battle ready fully funcional swords.  i got mine off ebay which was a poor choice.  for me swords signify my childhood and my imagination.  i would always play some sort of role playing game in the backyard with my brother that always involved the characters having swords.  any cartoon or movie i was drawn too would always have a sword somewhere (thundercats, heman, conan the barbarian, ninja turtles, etc. )  personally i would love to see an exhibit on this object to see as many as possible in one place and to learn more.  if for some reason you feel the need to know my favorite sword of all time is the atlantean from the movie conan the barbarian.  bad f'n ass
